European Mistletoe

Viscum album growing on a host tree
Latin: Viscum album
Country: Austria
Date: 2025
Place: Danube Valley
! Unlike fully parasitic plants, European mistletoe contains chlorophyll and can photosynthesise. Its roots penetrate the host tree through specialised structures called haustoria. Heavy infestations can weaken trees, particularly during drought.
Large green clumps of European mistletoe growing among the silvery foliage of a riverside tree. Mistletoe is a hemiparasitic evergreen plant that obtains water and minerals from its host while producing its own food through photosynthesis.
New addition Giant Bamboo Grove

Giant Bamboo Grove

Towering bamboo
Latin: Bambusoideae
Country: Sri Lanka
Date: 2024
Place: Norwood, Central Highlands
! Bamboo belongs to the grass family Poaceae. Individual culms have limited lifespans, but the underground rhizome system can sustain a clump for many decades. Historic bamboo stands at Norwood Bungalow have been described as more than 80 years old.
An impressive mature bamboo grove at Norwood, with numerous tall, closely packed culms rising from a shared clump. The established grove forms a dense green canopy against the surrounding tea estate landscape.
