Built by Empress Maria Theresa in 1775 as a "temple of glory" to act as a focal point for the garden and a monument to war.

The Parliament Building is built in the Gothic Revival style started in 1885 and completed 1904. It has a symmetrical façade and a central dome. The dome is Renaissance Revival architecture.

Opened on February 15, 1915, is a prominent heritage building and the second oldest in the South Island.
