Grasshoppers, Crickets & Mantises

A well-camouflaged Brown-Spotted Range grasshopper with a sandy brown body and subtle dark markings. Blends perfectly with dry vegetation and soil.

A large camouflaged katydid with extremely long antennae. Its bark-like appearance provides excellent concealment in forest environments. Many katydids communicate by rubbing specialised structures on their forewings together, producing species-specific calls known as stridulation. These sounds are used primarily to attract mates.

A large brown praying mantis is approximately 70–80 mm long. Its slender body, elongated thorax, and folded spiny forelegs are adaptations for ambushing insects. The brown coloration provides camouflage among dry branches, bark, and vegetation. Praying mantises are highly effective predators, using their mobile triangular heads and excellent vision to locate prey before striking rapidly with their grasping forelegs.

A brown katydid rests on a tiled surface, displaying its long threadlike antennae, narrow wings and slender legs. Its earthy colouring helps it blend into dry vegetation and woody surroundings. Katydids are close relatives of crickets and grasshoppers.

A brown short-horned grasshopper rests on a concrete surface, showing its compact antennae, folded wings and enlarged hind legs. Its mottled brown colouring provides camouflage against dry soil and vegetation. Grasshoppers are primarily plant-feeding insects and important members of terrestrial food webs.
