!The monument commemorates Sri Lanka’s independence from British colonial rule in 1948, and the site marks the location of the formal independence ceremony.
The Independence Memorial Hall is an open-sided ceremonial pavilion supported by rows of decorated columns beneath a broad tiled roof. Its architecture was inspired by the Magul Maduwa, the royal audience hall of the former Kandyan kingdom.
