! Jihlava’s underground network developed beneath the medieval town, with cellars and connecting passages used especially for storing goods. The surviving system extends for roughly 25 kilometres and is among the largest historic underground networks in the Czech Republic.
A small historical diorama displayed behind glass inside a brick-vaulted chamber of the Jihlava underground. The exhibition helps visitors imagine activities associated with the town and its subterranean spaces.

! Medieval and early modern merchants relied on cool subterranean cellars to keep beer, wine and other provisions in suitable conditions before mechanical refrigeration.
Wooden barrels displayed in a rough-hewn underground chamber illustrate the traditional storage functions of Jihlava’s historic cellars. The enclosed space provided more stable temperatures than buildings above ground.

A steep, narrow stairway descends into a low passage cut through rock beneath historic Jihlava. Its confined dimensions reveal the practical challenges of moving between underground chambers.
